Welcome to the Victorian Local Government Road Name Data Custodianship wiki
The purpose of this wiki is to provide an open forum for Victorian Local Government to dialogue through the proposal that:
Victorian Local Government formally accepts the role of data custodian for Victorian road name data; where each council has custodial responsibility for the spatial data within its municipal boundary.
The proposal is part of a broader initiative to implement Local Government data custodianship across property, property location addresses and road names across Victoria. The outcome is that Victorian local government will have collective state wide jurisdictional custodianship of these data sets for the benefit of local government, state government and the broader common good of all users of property, address and roads data.
Before taking on this obligation it is essential that Local Government understand:
- what is meant by road name data,
- definition of a road and road name, what is it?
- scope of reference data associated with the road name, what does it include?
- what are Councils current road-related powers, responsibilities and functions
- Is there a Road Name Data Reference Model and what are the Custodial Requirements in respect of this model?.
- what are the benefits of Local Government being custodian?
- what are the cost implications to Councils?
- what are the issues and risks associated with being data custodian?
